Looking out to the iconic Fistral Beach, the Bay Bar has floor to ceiling windows, views for miles and an undeniably stunning vista.
So when it came to refurbishment Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa’s Creative Director Gayle Nettleton has blended natural design elements from celebrated Cornish designer Tom Raffield. Using sculptural wood designs from Tom’s signature collection, offering the backdrop of a natural and calming seaside interior, without unnecessary nautical clichés. Famed for using a traditional steam bending process, Tom’s signature style sees him create complex 3D shapes for the modern design world. Gayle implemented Tom’s eye-catching designs and used them to bedeck the bar walls, all of which blends perfectly with the surrounding natural seascape and outside terrace.
What inspires your work?
TR – Nature is a big source of inspiration for my work so I love living somewhere beautiful. Cornwall is such a wild, windswept and wet county and the shapes and forms of the landscape feature heavily in my designs. I feel constantly inspired by the seasons and how they change the woodland around the workshop. I love Cornwall and I’m determined to stay in Cornwall.
How do you plan your collections?
TR – I have a very experimental and optimistic approach to things, I literally feel anything is possible if you put your mind to it; hence the wide range from architecture to lighting! Our product collections start as sketches on pen and paper that get carefully revised each season. These ideas then become proto-types which are
tested by our design team and then passed to our workshop. Every design is tested for consistency, aesthetic and functionality before it becomes part of an actual range, so there’s quite a few steps!
What is it you love about creating interiors?
TR – I have always loved designing and making things. I don’t think I could have done anything else as a profession, I’ve never been interested in anything else. I like the idea of bringing the outdoors in, I spend so much of my time outdoors that when I go inside at night I like to have sculptural pieces of artwork that imitate nature. I also like that interiors change all the time and inspire people to be more creative – I love designing new products to suit a whole range of spaces.
