We all know the benefits of exercise, those good endorphins kicking in making us feel uplifted, the increased activity helping us to control weight, increase bone density, strengthen the immune system. Many of us think that to achieve this we must spend time in the gym or attend classes by putting time aside in our busy schedules.
However, there can be just as many benefits as literally just moving more.
Our lives are more sedentary now compared to even 20 years due to increased technology, improved transportation and general improved quality of life. Many of us work in an office, drive to and from that office and spend time in front of technology.
We need to move more.
The importance of movement in everyday life should not be underestimated. The recommended amount of time to sit static is 30 minutes and never over an hour. Moving around on a regular basis is fundamental in helping to prevent chronic diseases. Even if this just means standing up at your desk, doing some stretches, you should always try and move wherever possible. Look for variety in movement so that you are using all your muscle groups and you don’t get bored. A great way to start the day is Qigong, yoga or swimming. All these gentle movements loosen muscles, build power, strengthen and protect the organs, improve circulation, ease stress and balance emotions. For those of a more energetic nature the gym offers the variety of equipment needed to use all those muscles.
- Use the stairs wherever possible.
- Park in furthest space from your destination so you have to walk.
- Leave your desk or even just stand up after 30 mins.
- Walk wherever possible.
- Fit exercise into your life.
- Do the housework more energetically.
