For most of us we only think about protecting our skin in the hotter summer months, but wellness and skincare is a 365 day a year job. During the Autumn and Winter periods our skin is exposed to a lot of different elements and therefore needs a touch more TLC than we probably think. We sat down with our Spa and Leisure Manager Megan, who gave us her top tips for Winter wellness and skincare advice to ensure our skin is well and truly looked after over the cooler months.
Drink plenty of water
Seems obvious but being hydrated is key in keeping your skin subtle throughout of the year – especially the Winter. Our skin in made up of 64% water so regular sipping of h2o will not only plump out the skin and help with fine lines and wrinkles, but will also encourage collagen production, help with any acne scarring and leave you feeling more energised. It’s recommended to drink 2 litres of the magic liquid a day to keep your skin and body glowing.
Always cleanse at the end of the day
And not with wipes! Although they are quick and easy, they strip the skin of its natural oils that keep the skin looking radiant. I recommend using GAIA’s Facial Toner (£22) with cotton pads instead of wipes as a quick fix to thoroughly cleanse your skin at the end of the day. For makeup wearers, why not try ESPA’s Nourishing Cleansing Balm (£40) to melt away your make up. Remove with a hot Muslim cloth for that at home spa treatment.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate
Exfoliating is key for that brighter complexion. It’s important to not use harsh, gritty products on the face, as this skin is some of the thinnest of the whole body. I would recommend using GAIA’s Naturally Face Exfoliator (£35) once a week. Blending mandarin, clary sage and petitgrain essential oils, this exfoliator leaves your skin feeling smooth while removing dead skin cells to allow for full absorption of GAIA Naturally Serum (£55) and their Facial Moisturiser (£50).
Wear a lip balm
It’s so important to wear and re-apply a lip balm throughout the day, especially during the winter months. As the weather gets colder our lips get dryer and can sometimes crack which can lead to a painful experience. I would recommend using GAIA’s Lip Balm (£12) throughout the day to keep lips kissable but for problematic lips use ESPA’s Nourishing Lip Treatment (£20) at night to plump and hydrate.
Although when it’s cold and dark outside the last thing we want to do is go and exercise – it’s really important for your wellbeing, both mentally and physically, to continue with a strong exercise routine throughout the cooler months. Finding a gym that works for you and your needs will make it easier to motivate yourself on those dark winter nights. Here at Fistral Spa we have a fully equipped gym, heated indoor pool, aromatherapy steam room, sauna and hot tub and with memberships starting from as little as £45 a month there is no excuse to hibernate for the winter…
